A Health and Wellness Program from Texas Cooperative Extension in Dallas County

Programs of the Month - During 2003, there will be a designated topic of the month, as well as a healthy recipe of the month. These special programs will be presented monthly at various locations throughout Dallas County on a consistent basis. These programs are also available for civic clubs and other organized groups as requested.

Extension Education E-Mail Club - Dallas County has an e-mail club for busy people who don't have time to commit to a monthly meeting. Each month, club members will receive a special newsletter, via e-mail, containing research-based information related to health, nutrition, child development, parenting, clothing & textiles, housing & interior design, and much more! The club will have quarterly "Ladies Night Out" programs.

Walk Across Texas - Walk Across Texas is an eight week walking program for teams of eight people. It is not a walk-a-thon or an event to raise money. It is strictly an educational program from Texas Cooperative Extension to promote physical activity and health. It will be conducted during September and October.

etter Living For Texans - The Better Living for Texans program teaches food stamp recipients about nutrition, food safety, and stretching food dollars. Ruth Valenzuela, BLT program assistant, teaches these classes.

Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes - This special series of lessons features valuable health and nutrition information related to diabetes education. The series will be available for groups in the spring.

Quarterly Cooking Schools - Four healthy cooking schools will be presented during 2003 at the Dallas Farmers Market. February's theme will be "Romantic Gourmet". May's theme will be "On The Patio". The theme for August will be "What's For Dinner?". And the final cooking school will be "Surviving The Holidays" in November.

Master Volunteers - The Wellness In The City Master Volunteer Program provides people with 25 hours of research-based health and nutrition training. In return, these volunteers give back 50 hours of volunteer service to the program. They assist with program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
