Wellness in the City for Tarrant County

Wellness in the City is an educational program of Texas Cooperative Extension focusing on health and wellness. It consists of several components that will encourage families to make lifetime changes that will promote healthy weight management and improve health.

The program components are:

Programs of the month...
Monthly educational activities will focus on specific health related topics. Each activity will include a short lecture, fact sheet and healthy recipes. These programs are available at locations throughout Tarrant County and upon request.

Lifestyle Choices for A Healthy Weight ...
This program series consist of six lessons that can help one learn to manage weight by making healthy food choices and increasing physical activity. Program activities will focus on the Food Guide Pyramid, meal planning, understanding food labels, incorporating physical activity into a busy life, healthy food preparation and dining out wisely.

Walk Across Texas...
A friendly competitive program to promote physical activity and healthy habits. Walk Across Texas is an eight week walking program for teams of eight. Each team member logs their weekly mileage and reports to a team captain. At the four week mark a midway point event will be held to motivate and encourage teams to keep on walking! At the conclusion of Walk Across Texas a CELEBRATION event will be held to recognize teams for their achievements!

Newsletter series...
A newsletter series is available on the topic of weight - loss. With the busy individual in mind, this newsletter series focuses on many of the topics of the weight management lesson series. It is available upon your request and comes via mail or e-mail.

Quarterly Cooking Schools...
Four cooking schools will be held in 2003 at the Tarrant County Education Building, each school will focus on quick, healthy and tasty dishes that can be easily prepared at home. The cooking school themes will be: February - Romantic Gourmet, June - On the Patio, September - What's for Dinner, November - Surviving the Holidays.

In 2004 Tarrant County Extension will be expanding it's Wellness in the City program to include Master Volunteers and Do Well Be Well With Diabetes.
